You borrow a dollar bill (any paper money) and a pencil from a friend, student, or colleague. The borrowed bill may be marked for later identification if desired. You proceed to use the pencil to pierce a hole in the center of the bill- there’s no doubt that the pencil is truly through the bill. Prepare for the gasps at what happens next…you rip the pencil through the bill! The pencil is clearly seen ripping through the bill… the sound of ripping paper is clearly heard! Yet somehow the bill is left completely unharmed! You repeat the effect, but this time the pencil mysteriously and visibly melts through the bill in slow motion-it looks unbelievable! If borrowed, you now return the pencil and the bill- or they may be handed out for complete examination.
