Lesson 1: The NGSS and 3-Dimensional Learning

We’ll take a deep-dive into 3-Dimensional learning, experiencing the same lesson through two different lenses.  First a traditional classroom model, then the same lesson in a 3-Dimensional model.  We’ll examine the similarities and differences between the design, delivery, student experience, and learning outcomes of each model.  This will truly be an eye-opening experience for you- the most powerful way to appreciate and understand 3-Dimensional learning.

Lesson 2: Phenomena-Driven Inquiry

Here you’ll discover a powerful teaching model that aligns directly with the objectives of the NGSS.  Consisting of 5 phases, this 3-Dimensional model presents one of the most powerful approaches to learning in an NGSS classroom.  We’ll closely examine the structure and explore each phase of the model, while learning how to implement, cultivate, and maximize meaningful learning opportunities in each through the most effective strategies.

Lesson 3: Harnessing the Power of Phenomena in the Science Classroom: Meaningful Phenomena

Our focus will center on discrepant events as we identify the characteristics that make them the most valuable type of phenomena to anchor a lesson.  We’ll learn how to most effectively introduce them and use them to drive the entire lesson in meaningful ways that significantly influence engagement and rewarding learning outcomes.  Innovative approaches to field-tested phenomena will be featured throughout the lesson.

Lesson 4: Instructional Design: Reshaping Your Existing Lessons and Aligning Your Curriculum

Research questions are an integral component to the NGSS classroom, culminating from student-generated questions that arise from the observation of phenomena and driving student-led investigations.  Yet their construction poses a significant challenge to students.  In this lesson we’ll target the components of a well-structured, rigorous research question that can lead to the most rewarding learning outcomes.  Then we’ll identify practical, scaffolded strategies that guide your students to identify these components and independently design rigorous research questions that can launch their investigations.

Lesson 6: Discourse and Argumentation in the NGSS Classroom

Authentic science is characterized by discourse and argumentation, skills that propel the construction of science knowledge.  Distinctly different from one another, they represent 2 student-centered critical features of the NGSS classroom that drive sense-making through a collaborative process.  In this lesson, we’ll discover how they can most effectively be facilitated and leveraged to guide the generative co-construction of knowledge.  Learn to foster and navigate emergent and collective learning through scaffolded strategies that encourage and cultivate contribution and participation.

Lesson 7: Effective Assessment Strategies in the NGSS Classroom

Assessments must align with the teaching and learning that occurs in our classrooms.  So, in this final lesson we’ll explore practical assessment techniques that support the distinct teaching and learning practices in a 3-Dimensional classroom.  These techniques will include both summative and formative assessment and their scope will encompass both knowledge and skill development.  We’ll also explore the many creative ways that models can be used throughout the entire lesson to develop and strengthen understandings for science concepts.  This lesson will feature actual student artifacts.
