The Stegosaurus was a slow-moving, plant eater. It lived during the late Jurassic Period, about 159 million to 144 million years ago. Easily recognizable by its spiked tail and series of larger triangular bony plates along its back, it grew to a length of about 21 feet! The bony plates along its back were embedded in its skin, not attached to its skeleton! Bony spikes at the end of its tail served as defensive weapons.
